NERCCS 2018 was a huge success! Check out the #NERCCS2018 hashtag timeline on Twitter to see how it was.

NERCCS 2018: The First Northeast Regional Conference on Complex Systems aims to establish a venue of interdisciplinary scholarly exchange for complex systems researchers in the Northeast U.S. region to share their research outcomes through presentations and post-conference online publications, network with their peers in the region, and promote inter-campus collaboration and the growth of the research community.

NERCCS will particularly focus on facilitating the professional growth of early career faculty, postdocs, and students in the region who have only limited resources but will likely play a leading role in the field of complex systems science and engineering in the coming years.

The conference will be held in the Innovative Technologies Complex at Binghamton University, which is within driving distance from all major urban areas in the U.S. Northeast region.

CALL FOR PAPERS

*** Abstract/paper submission is now closed ***

Because of numerous requests, the submission deadline has been extended for one week, to January 22, 2018. Those who already submitted can update their submissions on EasyChair until then.

We call for papers for oral and poster presentations on a wide variety of complex systems research. Relevant topics include (but are not limited to):

Theoretical foundations of complex systems
Nonlinear dynamics and chaos
Systems theory, information theory, and systems science
Game theory, decision theory, and socio-economical applications

Self-organization, pattern formation, and collective behavior
Structure and dynamics of complex networks
Sustainability and adaptability of complex systems
Bio-inspired systems, machine learning, and evolutionary computation

Data-driven approaches to complex systems
Applications to the humanities, art, and literature
Historical and philosophical aspects of complex systems
Complex systems and education

Submissions should be made as a single PDF file via EasyChair, in either extended abstract format (1 page) or full paper format (8 pages max.).

Submissions will be evaluated and selected through rigorous peer review processes. The expected number of accepted presentations is about 45 (15~25 oral presentations and 20~30 poster presentations, depending on logistic constraints).

Best Student Paper / Best Poster Awards: NERCCS 2018 will offer the Best Student Paper and Best Poster Awards. The winners will be selected from accepted student papers and posters by the judge panel, which will be recognized with a certificate at the conference. For the Best Student Paper Award, the student must be the first author of the submitted paper. To qualify for the Best Student Paper award, add "Student:" to the beginning of the title when you enter the title information in EasyChair. Our sponsor publishers, Hindawi and MDPI, will offer prizes for these awards (publication fee waiver of Complexity for the Best Student Paper Award, and publication fee waiver of Systems for the Best Poster Award).

Award Winners:

Best Student Paper: Brennan Klein (Northeastern University)
"Quantifying the Causal Structure of Complex Networks"

Prize (publication fee waiver of Complexity) offered by Hindawi

Best Poster: Bing Yao (Pennsylvania State University)
"Numerical Simulation of the Conduction and Propagation of Spatiotemporal Electrodynamics on the Heart Surface"

Prize (publication fee waiver of Systems) offered by MDPI

Important Dates:

Submission deadline:  January 15, 2018 January 22, 2018 (EXTENDED, FINAL DEADLINE)
Notification to authors:  March 12, 2018
Camera-ready deadline:  March 30, 2018
Registration deadline:  April 2, 2018
Pre-conference event:  April 11, 2018
Main conference:  April 12-13, 2018

All student/postdoc participants whose submissions are accepted for presentations will receive a registration fee waiver.

Accepted authors can opt to publish their contributions free of charge in a new open-access online journal, Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS), which is hosted by the Open Repository @ Binghamton (ORB).
